Nottingham University

The University of Nottingham wanted to present itself as a fresh and forward-thinking academic establishment. Its existing site was drowning beneath an abundance of mismatched content systems, leading to hundreds of separate websites and fragmented, inconsistent and disengaging content.

We created a centralised resource, a digital world where users could access a wealth of information quickly and easily, as well as offering clear signposting to the numerous departments and schools that form the university.

Importantly, we put the user first. To achieve this we carried out an extensive content audit of the existing site, as well as intensive stakeholder workshops. Through user focus groups, testing and card sorting sessions, we had the foundation to create an exciting new digital communication that would resonate with the target audience.

We widened the structure and scope of the site, offering fluid navigation and a design that reflected one of the university’s key USPs – the green and open feel of its campus. Users can now enjoy a clear and defined user journey, channelling searches towards relevant information, and if required, jumping to individual school or departmental sites for additional detail. Users can also view videos on range of subjects, including open days, careers, innovation and global reach. Those wanting more can access a dedicated YouTube university channel.

We worked alongside the university to produce comprehensive design guidelines and a robust prototype. This was then handed over to the university team for technical integration into its chosen CMS. The end result is a site that not only reflects what the university stands for, but one that inspires users to further their education or embrace exciting new business opportunities.
